XI AERNA Conference and XIV Meeting on International Economics

AERNA is an international scientific organization promoting collaboration and research in environmental, climate, and resource economics between Spain and Portugal, fostering communication among scholars, policymakers, and students, and organizing conferences, workshops, and awards to advance knowledge in the field. Formed in 2001-2002 by Spanish and Portuguese economists to deepen cooperation in environmental economics, AERNA organizes major conferences (e.g., biannual AERNA Conference), specialized workshops (e.g., Game Theory & Environment), and Young AERNA Days for PhD students and recognizes outstanding work through awards for best Master's and PhD theses in the field. Membership is open to individuals and institutions involved in the field, requiring university degree accreditation and a yearly fee, with funds used to support research.

The Spanish-Portuguese Association of Natural and Environmental Resources Economics (AERNA) is pleased to announce its XII AERNA Conference, which will take place at Universitat Jaume I, in Castellón, Spain, on September 3–4, 2026. It will be a joint event with the XIV Meeting of International Economics.

SUBMISSIONS

The call for papers is now open for submissions on all topics related to Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. The deadline for paper submissions is March 18, 2026. Theoretical and empirical papers in a reasonably advanced stage, as well as extended abstracts, are welcome. Young researchers and PhD students are especially encouraged to submit.

All submissions will undergo a standard peer-review process. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by April 30, 2026.

FEES

 

 A registration fee of 360 € (300€ for IEI submissions, without AERNA membership) will have to be paid upon acceptation of the submission. A limited number of travel grants offered by AERNA, will be available for PhD students.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Prof. Jean Marie Grether (University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland)

Jean-Marie Grether holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Geneva (1995) and is professor emeritus from the University of Neuchâtel since 2025. He has worked on economic integration, economic development and environmental issues for various universities and international organizations in Europe and America.

At the University of Neuchâtel, he has been vice-rector in charge of sustainability policies on the campus (2017-2026). He has also developed an original trans-disciplinary course on sustainability economics followed by students from different backgrounds (Economics, Humanities and Natural Sciences).


Prof. Joana Setzer (London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE))

Joana Setzer is an Associate Professor at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She is also the Co-Lead of the Mobilising legal, political, and governance systems theme of LSE’s Global School of Sustainability.
Her main areas of expertise are climate litigation and global environmental governance. Joana leads the Grantham Research Institute’s Climate Change Laws of the World project – the most comprehensive global resource on climate policy and legislation.

Joana served as a Contributing Author for Working Group 3 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Review (IPCC AR6). She regularly advises a range of international, governments and non-governmental organisations. She is a frequent speaker at academic and non-academic events, and a regular source for media outlets.

Environmental economics, natural resource economics, sustainability, climate change, energy transitions, circular economy, water-energy-food nexus, public policy, and research on efficient resource management, covering areas like electricity markets or decarbonization.
