speakers

GIOVANNI GAROFALO is Full Professor of Spanish Linguistics at the Dipartimento di Lingue, Letterature e Culture Straniere (Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures) at the Università degli Studi di Bergamo (University of Bergamo, Italy). After studying Translation (French, English, and Spanish) and Foreign Languages and Literatures (Modern Greek and Spanish), he worked for a decade as a translator and interpreter at the Italian Ministry of Interior, an experience that directed his interest toward institutional communication and specialized discourse.

He maintains collaborative links with research groups in Spain and Italy. He is a member of CERLIS (Centro di Ricerca sui Linguaggi Specialistici) at the University of Bergamo and an affiliate member of the CORPLING (Corpus Linguistics, Developments and Applications) group at the University of Valencia, under the direction of Dr. Gregori-Signes. He collaborates as a researcher in the EDAP (Estudios del Discurso Académico y Profesional) group at the University of Barcelona, directed by Dr. Estrella Montolío, and participates in projects of the Tecnolengua Group at the University of Malaga, coordinated by Dr. Antonio Moreno Ortiz.

His main lines of research cover Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) and specialized corpus-based translation, with a particular focus on legal and political discourse. In recent years, he has worked on generating discourses of resistance, depathologization, and collective empowerment. He has edited the volume Estudios de género asistidos por corpus: Enfoques multidisciplinarios (Peter Lang, 2024), which brings together research on gender representations and the interdisciplinary potential of corpus analysis in critical discourse studies.

GIOVANNA MAPELLI is a senior lecturer of Spanish Language, Linguistics, and Translation at the University of Milan. She is the author of numerous studies on Spanish linguistics, with a special focus on specialized languages and, in particular, medical discourse (“Image activities on the Facebook pages of Spanish pediatricians: the case of ‘Lucía, mi pediatra’” 2019; “Deixis and image activity in Spanish pediatrics blogs” 2019;  “Image activities and attenuation in pediatric consultations” 2020; “Recommendations in Spanish pediatricians' blogs” 2023; “The discursive representation of menopause and women on social media” 2023) and tourism communication (“Travel guides 2.0: Lexicon and metadiscourse” 2016; Linguistic mechanisms of persuasion on social media. Hotel chains on Instagram" 2023). Noteworthy publications include the co-authored book Las lenguas de especialidad en español (2023) and the recent monograph El discurso de los pediatras en las redes sociales (2024).

She is a member of the national research project “Biomedical discourse and communication in multicultural societies” (code 20227FWEZ5), funded by the Italian Ministry of Education (2023-2025).

JAVIER PÉREZ GUERRA is Full Professor of English Linguistics at Universidade de Vigo, where he coordinates the LVTC (Language Variation and Textual Categorisation) research group and serves as director of the Lingua Research Institute. His areas of specialisation include information packaging at the clause level, multidimensional approaches to register variation, the influence of performance preferences and processing ease on grammatical design and grammatical (micro-)variation in English, examined from empirical corpus-based perspectives. Javier has published in national and international journals, including Folia Linguistica Historica, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Studia Linguistica, English Studies, Languages in Contrast, English Language and Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory, Vial, Ibérica and International Journal of Applied Linguistics. He has also contributed to volumes published by Routledge, John Benjamins, Mouton de Gruyter, Oxford UP, Cambridge UP and Multilingual Matters. Javier enjoys proving that linguistic solutions are inherently multidimensional, shaped by biological, internal and external factors.

NIALL CURRY is a UKRI Metascience AI Fellow and Reader in Languages and Linguistics at the School of English, at Manchester Metropolitan University. His work addresses issues in applied linguistics, with specific interest in corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics, discourse analysis, and language pedagogy. His most recent work addresses the use of Artificial Intelligence in applied linguistics, climate discourses across languages and cultures, corpus linguistics for materials development, and studies of public-oriented research communication. He is Series Co-Editor of the Routledge Applied Corpus Linguistics and Routledge Corpus Linguistics Guides book series, Section Editor of Elsevier Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics, a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, and an Associate Fellow of the Global China Academy. CALL FOR PAPERS

CALL FOR PAPERS

We are delighted to announce the Call for Papers for the 5th edition of the EnTRetextos International Conference, which will be hosted by the Interuniversity Institute for Modern Applied Languages (IULMA) at Universitat Jaume I, Castelló, Spain.

This edition’s theme, Discourses in the Digital Era: Society, Gender, and Applied Language Perspectives, invites scholars, researchers, and professionals to explore how discourse is shaped, challenged, and redefined in contemporary digital, multilingual, and multicultural contexts.

We especially welcome contributions that examine discourse through the lens of technology, artificial intelligence, gender studies, and societal change, as well as through applied language research in professional, academic, and everyday communicative settings.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Digital and AI-Mediated Discourses: The impact of artificial intelligence, chatbots, and digital platforms on language use, discourse practices, and communication in social, educational, or institutional contexts.
  • Applied Linguistics, Pedagogy and Digital Tools: Use of digital resources, language technologies, and multimodal platforms in language teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS): Corpus-based approaches to analyse discourse patterns in social, professional, and academic settings.
  • Professional and Intercultural Communication: Language use in law, healthcare, business, media, and education, especially in relation to digitalisation and cross-cultural communication. It may also include translation practices, and intercultural negotiation in globalised, multilingual contexts

  • Gender, Identity, and Social Change in Discourse: Analyses of discourses around gender, diversity, and identity across domains such as media, politics, education, and professional settings.

We encourage contributions that adopt a critical, empirical, or applied approach, as well as interdisciplinary methodologies that bridge language studies with media, education, sociology, gender studies, or digital humanities.

We look forward to welcoming you in Castellón for a stimulating exchange of ideas on how discourse shapes, and is shaped by the digital, social, and linguistic realities of our time.
