From May 25 to 29,
Universitat Jaume I will host the international conference
"EDUC Retreat: New Ethical Challenges in Research, Emerging Ethical Challenges in Research, and the Advancement of Good Practices," an initiative aimed at doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from the European
EDUC alliance.
The conference brings together over one hundred participants from various European universities in Castellón to reflect on new ethical challenges in research and share strategies for strengthening good practices, scientific integrity, and responsible conduct across all academic disciplines. The Universitat Jaume I-Business Foundation (FUE-UJI) is collaborating with Universitat Jaume I in organizing this international conference.
The opening ceremony included remarks from the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Eva Camacho; the Director of the Doctoral School, Mercè Correa; and the event coordinator, Ramón A. Feenstra. During his address, Camacho emphasized the importance of addressing ethics in a scientific and technological context marked by artificial intelligence, open science, and growing societal demands.
The opening presentation was given by José Félix Lozano, professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and member of the Spanish Research Ethics Committee, who reflected on the main factors eroding scientific ethics, such as hyper-competitiveness, pressure to publish, and the commodification of science.
Throughout the week, the program will combine lectures, debates, and practical sessions on issues such as the responsible use of artificial intelligence, ethical data management, the identification of predatory journals, and responsible authorship, while also fostering spaces for joint reflection and international collaboration.
The
EDUC (European Digital UniverCity) alliance comprises eight universities from seven European countries and also includes collaborating institutions from the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
