Universitat Jaume I has joined the official period of mourning declared by the Spanish Government following the train accident in Urda (Toledo), expressing its sorrow for the victims of this tragedy and its solidarity with all those affected.

During the official mourning period, which will remain in effect until midnight on 31 October 2026, flags at all Universitat Jaume I buildings and facilities will fly at half-mast. Cultural activities, as well as festive, recreational and celebratory events organised by UJI or held on university premises, will be suspended.

Teaching, research and administrative activities at Universitat Jaume I will continue as usual. However, institutional and academic events will begin with a minute's silence in memory of those who lost their lives.

The university community has also gathered in silence outside the University's Rectorate building, following a call by Rector Jesús Lancis and his Governing Team, to express their condolences to the victims' families and show their support and empathy for everyone affected.

Jesús Lancis also expressed his gratitude to all emergency response teams, security personnel, healthcare professionals and members of the public who have generously offered their assistance. He highlighted that this minute's silence also coincides with the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the DANA floods, commemorating those affected in 2024 and those impacted by the events in Oliva this October.

"As a university community, we share in the grief over the loss of human lives and stand in solidarity with those whose lives have been changed forever. We cannot put ourselves in their place, but we can convey our respect and let them know that we stand with them," the Rector stated.
